After 17 years, I just found out I have a clean out plug to my septic tank. Can I extend it to ground level?
I had a plumber come out and run the scope through my house lines. He discovered my clean-out plug...about a foot underground. I've always seen them above ground. It's the black pipe so I'm wondering if I can extend it up to ground level. The cap is off. I know this because he left me with a hole in my yard, a wheelbarrow sized mound of dirt on my porch, and the cap just sitting there next to the clean out. I'm guessing he forgot to clean up unless he did this for a reason. I'm good with pvc work so I wanted to know if I could just splice into this and extend it. I also know the black line isn't the same as pvc but I should be able to work with it ok.
Len obviously didn't read my question correctly. This is the cleanout plug leading to the septic, from the house. I never implied it was attached to the septic tank.
the black plastic pipe is ABS, and according to code you have to use a mechanical joint to join abs and pvc. But all you really need to do is get ur self some all purpose glue and it will join the 2 types of pipes

Preparing Your Car for Fall and Winter
Autumn is a wonderful time of the year that most of us look forward to. Football, Thanksgiving and playing in leaves are all great past times we associate with the season. But hindsight is 20/20, and we should all remember that fall and winter can wreak havoc on your vehicle as well. There are just a few things that you should check out on your car to make sure that you keep it in good shape through your favorite time of year. Being proactive through this season with your auto care can save you a lot of time and money. It will also go a long way toward preventing the need of emergency roadside assistance.
Start with checking out your tires. Pay especially close attention to the quality of the tread. If you have had them on your car for the last 9 months, they may have begun to wear; and their traction may not be what it once was. This can be really dangerous, leading to spinning out on ice and wet patches. The easiest way to test the effectiveness of your tread against these circumstances is to perform the penny test. Stick a penny sideways between your tires tread; if Lincoln's face isn't covered by the tread then you may want to consider looking into new tires.
After checking your tread, you need to make sure that your tires have good pressure. The correct PSI (pounds per square inch) for your specific tires can be found in your owner's manual, unless you've upgraded your tires and shock system (i.e. lowering or raising your vehicle, placing different sized rims and tires on your car). If you have upgraded, get on the internet or speak to a qualified auto service technician about what the correct PSI for your tires should be. If your tires don't have enough air, put some more in. Proper tire pressure is essential to lengthening the life of your tire tread and increasing your cars fuel economy.
The fall and winter seasons carry with them a drop in humidity that can cause the seals and cap on your gas tank to crack or wear. This is because a drop in humidity means a change in atmospheric pressure which can affect the pressure within your gas tank, placing unwanted strain on these parts. Simply inspect the gas cap and its seals for wear and tear. New gas caps for your car can be found at most auto parts stores and an auto maintenance technician can take care of any worn seals you may discover. Make sure your gas cap is always secure.
Check your windshield and your rear window for any cracks and chips. The cold weather can cause these cracks to expand quickly. Most auto glass repair technicians can easily replace up to a six inch crack, but if you go beyond that, it's more than likely you'll have to replace the entire piece of glass. The wipers should also be in good repair and working condition. If they're dry and cracked, go ahead and replace them. Fall and winter bring rain and snow; and if your windshield wipers are worn, your visibility could be impaired, creating a potential safety hazard.
Now it's time to get under your hood. Go ahead and top off all of your fluids (washer, brake and transmission). Make sure that you have the proper mix of antifreeze and water; they should be mixed in equal parts. You don't want your engine freezing up during a storm, not only because of the engine damage it can cause; no one wants to be stranded in the snow. Make sure that all of the fluids you put in your engine comply with the instructions of your owner's manual.
Cold weather can cause your oil to thicken so go ahead and change it as the season changes. Thicker oil can damage, rather than properly lubricate your engine. Most owner manuals instruct you on what oil you should use during cold weather, but again, if you're unsure, speak to a qualified auto service technician.
Now check out your belts and hoses. They should be free of dirt, cracks and burns. They should also feel sturdy and not loose or spongy to the touch. If they don't hold up to these criteria, you should consider replacing them. Scheduling a replacement on a hose or belt is a lot easier than dealing with it when they break on the road.
Car batteries are known the world over for dying at the first sign of cold, so have your battery tested. The cold has a negative effect on your battery's life span by freezing the electrolytes within the battery. Battery warmers and block warmers are good thing to have on hand for people that live in consistently cold weather climates.
However, if you get regular maintenance checks, most of these things will be just a redundant check. Remember, there are many emergency roadside assistance service companies available 24 hours a day to help you out in the event that your car goes out on you. Now go enjoy your turkey and football!
